The Reinforced Earth Company was contracted by Yallourn Mine to design a coal conveyor tunnel operating under a river and a maximum of 40m of fill. As a consequence of the unsuitable foundation, a geotechnical specialist was employed to re-design the foundation taking into consideration several differing detailed footing designs. The footings allowed for projected high levels of differential settlement and were constructed with movement joints at 12m intervals. By offering a job specific TechSpan® arch unit to cater for the unconventionally high loads, the Reinforced Earth Company allowed for varying arch thickness’ to accommodate the maximum loads sustained throughout the central length of the tunnel.
