In 2004 Blackwater Coal Mine required a new $234 million coal handling and preparation plant to replace the existing North, South and Thermal facilities. RECO was awarded the design and supply of the 21m high dump structure required for the expansion. The design concept for the dump structure incorporated two independent bridges spanning approximately 18 m across the hoppers and a traditional rear dump slab. Either fully laden Komatsu 930E dumpers or Kress 300C trucks load the bridges. The structure is required to have a minimum 30-year design life. At the time of construction this 2820m² TerraClass® dump structure was Australia's largest-ever turnkey design and construct contract for the coal mining industry. The construction of the highly loaded, complex true abutment structure was complicated by difficult foundation conditions and contaminated storm water ingress potential.
