In a first for Australia and New Zealand, grouted soil nails (25mm diameter galvanised Reid D500N bars, 8m long in 125mm diameter grouted holes) were used to increase the strength of existing Reinforced Earth wing walls to support a road widening with new bridge loading. Primary advantages included keeping the original structure safely in service without the need for traffic control on the National Highway above and avoiding the need for complex/expensive temporary supporting walls.
